Fuhrman, Mike. “AmesburyTruth breaks ground on new Statesville Center of Excellence.” Statesville Free News. Nov. 10, 2016.
Under a bright blue sky on Thursday morning, AmesburyTruth company officials celebrated the beginning of construction of their newest Center of Excellence by holding a ceremonial groundbreaking at the property off Fanjoy Road in Statesville.
Site preparation is well under way, and operators of the earthmoving equipment did not pause for the ceremony, which was attended by city and county officials.
“I love the noise,” AmesburyTruth COO James Larson said. “There’s nothing like the sound of diesel engines, scrapers and progress.”
Construction of the 242,074-square-foot facility is expected to be complete by August, when employees from the company’s two existing local plants will begin moving into the center.
At the company’s existing East and West facilities in Statesville, about 155 employees manufacture pile and foam weather-seal, as well as window balance systems for the door and window industry. Company officials plan to expand the local workforce to 250 employees over the next five years.
The company began operations in Statesville in 1989 — in fact, six of the original employees still work in the West building.
Reflecting on the support Amesbury Truth has felt from its employees, customers and the community over the years, Larson told the small crowd at Thursday morning’s ceremony that those relationships helped inspire the company to invest and grow locally.
“We really strongly believe North Carolina and especially Statesville is a great place to do business for us — and for workers,” the COO said. “We’re so excited about the future.”
The manufacturer, which is owned by Tyman, a British company, which has multiple sites across North America and major operations in Statesville; Sioux Falls, S.D., Owatonna, Minn., and Juarez, Mexico. Annual sales total about $380 million.
The new facility will be located on 27.4 acres. When completed, it will have 130,260 square feet devoted to production, 90,845 square feet of warehouse space and 20,969 square feet of office space. There’s room for future expansion to the rear of the facility.
Statesville Mayor Cost Kutteh said Thursday’s ceremony was the culmination of the efforts of company officials, city and county staff members and elected officials, and Statesville Regional Development. He also praised the Fanjoy family for helping preserve the site for industrial development.
“This is going to create an opportunity for our citizens to find employment — and good employment — right here,” Kutteh said.
AmesburyTruth will invest $38 million in the project, which includes the cost of real estate, equipment and machinery. The Iredell County Board of Commissioners and Statesville City Council agreed to provide $1.63 million in tax incentives over six years to encourage the company to expand locally.
